Red tailed hawks use flight to mate. In early spring, they participate in annual mating rituals. Demonstrations of elaborate courtship displays and acrobatic flights are the beginning to starting a family.

Flight is also an important tool when hunting prey. These hawks scour the sky until they see a possible meal, and then swoop down to retrieve it.

These hawks also use flight to defend and protect their territory.
